As a Midland, TX photographer, I’m always looking for opportunities to capture real, raw Texas moments — the kind filled with grit, heart, dust, and adrenaline. This weekend I decided to head out to the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa, TXjust for fun, and I’m so glad I did. I came home with memory cards full of flying hooves, determined riders, dirt-kicking barrel turns, and the unmistakable spirit of West Texas rodeo life.
From bronc riders launching sky-high to fearless bullfighters protecting fallen riders, every second of the arena was bursting with energy.
Even though I wasn’t there on assignment, I couldn’t resist lifting my camera and capturing the excitement. The warm arena lighting, the grit on the ground, the motion of horse and rider — it all came together in a way that makes a photographer’s heart beat a little faster. Below are a few of my favorite shots from the weekend, each one a small piece of what makes Texas rodeos so iconic.
The Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo is one of the highlights of winter here in the Permian Basin, and attending reminded me just how much I love photographing our deep Western culture.
