- Background: The background must be plain white or light-colored, with no shadows.
- Pose and Expression: The face must be square to the camera with a neutral expression, eyes open, and mouth closed. No smiling.
- Photo Quality: The photo must be printed on high-quality photographic paper, either matte or glossy.

- Pose and Expression: The face must be directly facing the camera with a neutral expression or a natural smile, with both eyes open.
- Photo Quality: The photo must be printed on high-quality photographic paper or be submitted in a digital format meeting specific requirements.
- Glasses: As of November 2016, glasses are not allowed unless they are medically necessary (a signed statement from a doctor is required).

- Head Size: The measurements of the face size differ slightly, with specific requirements for each country.
- Background: Both countries require a plain background, but Canada specifies no shadows, and the U.S. allows off-white backgrounds.
- Pose and Expression: Both countries require a neutral expression, but the U.S. allows a natural smile while Canada does not.
- Glasses: Canada allows glasses if there is no glare, while the U.S. generally does not allow glasses unless medically necessary.
- Paper: Both require high-quality photographic paper, but digital submission specifications may differ.
- Age of Photo: Both countries require that the photo be taken within the last 6 months.
These differences ensure that the photos meet each country’s specific security and identification needs.
