With the abundance of photographers in our area, it’s important to research your photographers when deciding who should take your newborn’s 1st portraits.  Newborn photography is not easy.  It’s requires training, safety procedures, and patience. With all the trendy newborn posing these days it’s scary to see inexperienced photographers attempt to do them on your newborns without knowing that these shots are usually composited (combining more than 1 picture) or have someone close by like mommy or an assistant to spot baby.  A baby could seriously be hurt if your photographer is not trained or prepared.

What you should look for in a newborn photographer?

-Do they have an online portfolio that is not on Facebook, like a website?  Does their style look consistent?  (Some photographers may steal other people’s work and represent it as their own)

-When was the last time they took a newborn training class or seminar?

-How many babies did your photographer actually photograph in the last few months?

-What is your photographers plan to keep your baby safe during the shoot?  Will there be an assistant or will they ask you to help out?

-Do they have references or reviews you can look at?

Common safety practices in newborn photography

-Any pose that requires baby’s head in the upright position requires compositing.  Like the froggy pose.  Do not let your photographer attempt these poses without someone supporting the baby at all times.   In all reality, every baby is different and may not let you do the more trendy poses.  This is ok.

-Tall baskets need to have a weight in the bottom to keep it from tipping over with baby inside. If baby’s head is going to be up then someone needs to be there spotting and supporting baby.

-Any prop that baby is on like moon, baskets, etc…  needs to have a spotter close by.

Congrats on your new baby momma and if you decide to book with KCP, you can be assured that your baby will be in the best of care.  <3
